Vienna: The State of Qatar has urged members of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors to support a draft resolution aimed at removing the "Implementation of the Safeguards Agreement in the Syrian Arab Republic" from the Board's agenda. This move seeks to reinstate Syria's normal status within the Agency.
According to Qatar News Agency, this appeal was made by HE Ambassador Jassim Yaqoub Al Hammadi, Qatar's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office and International Organizations in Vienna, during a speech prior to the Board's vote. He expressed gratitude to Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt, and Morocco for their efforts in drafting the resolution and engaging with Board members to facilitate its adoption.
Ambassador Al Hammadi highlighted the IAEA Director General's report, which indicated that Syria has taken steps to address outstanding issues related to past nuclear activities. The report described the progress as a "historic breakthrough," achieved through Syria's initiative to improve its cooperation with the Agency.
The ambassador emphasized that adopting the draft resolution, in line with the Director General's report and Syria's commitment to ongoing cooperation, would enable Syria to more fully benefit from the peaceful applications of nuclear energy. This would support development and reconstruction, enhance stability, and improve living standards for the Syrian people.
