Qatar and Vietnam Celebrate 30 Years of Diplomatic Relations, Eyeing Future Trade and Investment Opportunities.

Doha: The relations between the State of Qatar and the Socialist Republic of Vietnam have been marked by robust diplomatic ties, characterized by mutual respect and shared interests. Diplomatic relations were officially established on February 8, 1993, and have since flourished with high-level visits and agreements in various fields. The two nations recently celebrated their 30th anniversary of diplomatic ties, reflecting on the significant progress made in political, economic, and educational sectors.

According to Qatar News Agency, the recent visit of Vietnam’s Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh to Doha underscores the commitment of both countries to deepen their bilateral relationship. During his visit, Prime Minister Chinh met with Qatar’s Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani to discuss enhancing cooperation in political, economic, trade, and investment sectors, as well as addressing international issues of mutual interest. This visit is part of ongoing efforts to expand the scope of collaboration between th
e two nations.

Over the years, the two countries have engaged in numerous high-level exchanges, including the visit of Vietnam’s Vice President Vo Thi Anh Xuan to Doha in May 2023. During her visit, discussions focused on boosting trade and investment, with Qatar’s Minister of Commerce and Industry highlighting economic policies that encourage foreign investment in the country. The Vice President also explored opportunities for Vietnamese halal products in Islamic markets and called for increased bilateral trade.

The economic partnership between Qatar and Vietnam is further evidenced by a 33% growth in trade exchange in 2022, reaching over QR 2 billion. Vietnam imports goods such as liquefied gas and fertilizers from Qatar, while exporting seafood, electronics, and other products. Joint projects in sectors like health and pharmaceuticals are also underway, showcasing the strength of their trade relations.

On the political front, the third round of consultations between the foreign ministries of both countr
ies took place in Hanoi last July, focusing on bilateral cooperation and issues of joint interest. Educational cooperation is also a priority, with Qatar offering scholarships to Vietnamese students for Arabic language studies.

Vietnam’s strategic location and booming economy make it an attractive destination for foreign investments. As one of the fastest-growing economies in Asia, Vietnam has become a global manufacturing hub, attracting investments in agriculture, industry, tourism, and other sectors. Its membership in ASEAN further enhances its appeal as an investment partner.
