Qatar and Lebanon Strengthen Diplomatic Ties Amid Challenging Times

Doha: The State of Qatar and the Republic of Lebanon continue to build on their historical relationship characterized by brotherhood and cooperation. HE President of the Republic of Lebanon, General Joseph Aoun, is currently visiting Qatar to meet with HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani at the Amiri Diwan. The leaders aim to discuss the enhancement of bilateral relations across various sectors, reflecting their shared interest in mutual growth and development.

According to Qatar News Agency, the diplomatic ties between Qatar and Lebanon date back to the early 1970s, marked by the establishment of embassies in both Beirut and Doha in 1972. The relationship has been strengthened over the decades through Qatar’s continuous support for Lebanon, particularly during times of crisis. Notably, Qatar played a crucial role in the Lebanese National Dialogue Conference in 2008, which resulted in the Doha Agreement, a significant step towards resolving Lebanon’s political crisis.

Qatar’s support extends beyond political aid, involving substantial contributions towards reconstruction and humanitarian efforts. Following the July 2006 war, Qatar was instrumental in rebuilding Lebanon’s infrastructure, providing financial and logistical assistance to restore homes and support the Lebanese Army with financial aid and fuel supplies.

In response to the Beirut Port explosion in 2020, Qatar promptly delivered medical, food, and relief assistance, and contributed to the restoration of damaged landmarks like the Lebanese National Library. Qatar’s commitment to Lebanon’s development is further emphasized by initiatives aimed at enhancing the education sector and ensuring learning opportunities.

Qatar’s support for Lebanon persists through consistent aid, such as monthly food supplies for the Lebanese army and a USD 50 million pledge for the Beirut Port’s reconstruction. During recent Israeli aggression, Qatar provided an air bridge delivering substantial aid to Lebanon.

Frequent official visits between Qatari and Lebanese leaders have fortified their diplomatic relationship. HH the Amir’s attendance at the Arab Economic and Social Development Summit in Beirut in 2019, and past visits by Qatari leaders, underscore Qatar’s dedication to Lebanon. Recent interactions, including the visit of HE Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani to Beirut, signify ongoing efforts to strengthen ties and support Lebanon’s sovereignty and development.
