Qatar Advocates for Enhanced Support for Least Developed Countries’ Graduation by 2031

Geneva:The State of Qatar has emphasized the need for stronger international cooperation, increased development financing, and targeted technical support to assist the least developed countries (LDCs) in achieving sustainable economic growth and graduating from their current classification. This call was made during a high-level dialogue at the World Trade Organization's 10th Global Review of Aid for Trade.

According to Qatar News Agency, HE Minister of State for International Cooperation Dr. Maryam bint Ali Al Misnad highlighted the slow progress in moving the world's poorest countries beyond LDC status, noting that only eight countries have graduated since the category was established in 1971, leaving 44 countries remaining on the list.

Dr. Al Misnad stressed the significance of the Doha Programme of Action for the LDCs (2022-2031) as a framework to accelerate progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals. She outlined three key priorities developing national graduation plans, enhancing technical assistance and institutional capacity, and ensuring sustainable financial support before and after LDC graduation.

She also called for tailored national roadmaps, distinguishing between countries close to graduation and those facing deeper challenges, and urged the United Nations and development partners to provide direct technical assistance aligned with national priorities. Emphasizing long-term development financing, she advocated for increased funding, expanded grants, and cooperation with development banks.

The minister highlighted the importance of initiatives under the Doha Programme of Action, such as sustainable investment support and improved food security, and emphasized the role of technology and innovation in driving economic growth. The March 2027 midterm review in Doha is seen as a pivotal moment for assessing progress and implementing concrete measures to support LDCs' sustainable development.
