PCBS Warns of Environmental Catastrophe Threatening Life in Gaza

Ramallah, – The Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics (PCBS) warned on Thursday of an environmental catastrophe threatening life in Gaza as a result of the Israeli occupation’s ongoing aggression against the Strip since Oct. 7.

The PCBS stated that the Gaza Strip is suffering from a severe crisis in obtaining water. Estimates show that the people are barely getting between one and three liters per person per day, comapred to 82.7 liters before the aggression. The low water supplies are 90 percent higher than they were before.

Because of the occupation’s destruction of infrastructure, about 65 sewage pumps are not working, and all six wastewater treatment plants and their systems have stopped working completely due to power outages and fuel shortages. This led to the flow of about 130000 cubic meters per day of untreated sewage into the waters of the Mediterranean Sea in the Gaza Strip.

Data also show that the continuing aggression on the Gaza Strip and the lack of fuel led to the loss of service of the solid waste collection vehicles and sanitary landfills, greatly affecting the service.

Before the aggression, the rate of waste collection was estimated at about 98 percent, as it was sent to sanitary landfills, while it has now decreased to less than 20 percent. Large quantities of waste are piled up in the streets, shelter centers, schools, and in some temporary dumps, the PCBS revealed.
