Parliamentary group participates in UN affairs committee meeting

Geneva, Bahrain’s parliamentary group, represented by MP Hassan Ibrahim Hassan, participated in the meeting of the Standing Committee on United Nations Affairs, held as part of the 149th General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Switzerland. The meeting discussed the role of parliaments in implementing UN treaties.

The parliamentary group underscored Bahrain’s legislative authority’s pivotal role in reviewing and enacting laws in line with international treaties signed by the Kingdom, contributing to development across various sectors.

MP Hassan Ibrahim highlighted the critical role of parliament in reviewing treaty ratifications, ensuring their enforcement by improving legislative frameworks, and promoting international commitment. He emphasised that parliaments can effectively contribute to achieving treaty objectives through international cooperation, sharing expertise, and engaging civil society to ensure successful ratification and implementation.

He also noted that Bahrain has passed
several laws in line with international treaties, stating that after ratification, it is the parliament’s responsibility to enact or update laws to ensure proper treaty implementation. Parliamentary committees play a key role in overseeing the enforcement of international agreements.

MP Hassan stressed the importance of enhancing cooperation between countries by exchanging information and expertise on treaty implementation; ensuring parliaments align with international standards through collaboration with their counterparts worldwide.
