Pakistan: Death Toll Rises to 143 People Following Heavy Rains

The death toll from the heavy monsoon rains, storms and accompanying floods that recently swept Pakistan has risen to 143 people.

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in the northwest of the country was the most affected by the rains, as it witnessed the death of 83 people, while 21 people died in the Punjab province. The rains also caused the deaths of 21 people in the Balochistan province, 14 in the Kashmir region, and four people in Sindh province, Pakistani authorities reported.

For its part, Pakistan Meteorological Department said that the amount of rain that fell last April was twice the general average, as it exceeded normal levels by 164 percent in April, which is unusual.

During the past year, Pakistan witnessed monsoon rainfall in quantities exceeding the usual rates, in addition to the unprecedented floods caused by the melting of ice in the north and south, which resulted in the death of more than 1,700 people and the displacement of millions.
