Ninth Edition of Aswan International Women Film Festival Kicks Off in Egypt

Aswan: The ninth edition of the Aswan International Women Film Festival has officially begun in Egypt, featuring over 60 films from around 30 countries. This year’s edition is named “The Star of the East – Umm Kulthum”, marking 50 years since her passing, with events running until May 7.

According to Qatar News Agency, the festival’s program includes 10 feature films and 20 short films competing in the official competitions, 25 Egyptian films under the “Southern Films” and “Impact Films” categories, and 6 British films, showcased in a special program in collaboration with the London Breeze Festival.

During the opening ceremony, President of Egypt’s National Council for Women, Amal Ammar stated that over the past nine years, the festival has proven to be a true platform for meaningful cinema, bringing together filmmakers who advocate for women’s issues through an authentic artistic lens that transcends borders and languages. She emphasized that naming this edition after Umm Kulthum reflects her status as a cultural icon, not just an exceptional voice, but also a symbol of Arab womanhood.

In addition to the official competitions, the festival has introduced a new category titled “Southern and Nile Films”, dedicated to young talents. The Aswan International Women Film Festival is a unique cinematic event focused on women’s issues, serving as a global creative dialogue that highlights women’s roles in society and sheds light on the challenges they face.
