Niger’s Military Council Deny Entry of ECOWAS Delegation

Niger’s military council has denied the entry of a delegation of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) for security reasons.

Niger’s Foreign Ministry stated, in a letter to ECOWAS, that the delegation cannot come for security reasons and noted the current anger and discontent of the population due to the sanctions imposed by ECOWAS.

ECOWAS threatened to use force and had given Niger’s military until yesterday Monday to restore power to President-elect Mohamed Bazoum who was overthrown by the military on July 26.

ECOWAS announced an emergency meeting this Thursday to discuss developments in Niger after the military ignored the request and deadline.
