Doha: The National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) welcomed the issuance Sunday by HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani of Law No. 22 of 2025 on persons with disabilities. The new law aims to promote and protect the rights of persons with disabilities, aligning with the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, and includes advanced provisions to support these rights, said HE Chairperson of NHRC, Maryam bint Abdullah Al Attiyah.
According to Qatar News Agency, Al Attiyah highlighted that the provisions of the new law ensure the full and effective engagement of persons with disabilities in the community, empowering them to equally exercise all rights and freedoms with others. The law prohibits discrimination based on disability, achieves equal opportunities, includes persons with disabilities in the community, and guarantees the upholding of their dignity and personal autonomy.
The law also emphasizes respect for the rights of children with disabilities, safeguarding their identity, and advancing their capabilities and skills. It fosters their inclusion and engagement in the community, Her Excellency noted.
HE Al Attiyah reiterated the NHRC’s commitment to working with all relevant stakeholders, including persons with disabilities, to ensure the effective enforcement of this law and to address any updated challenges in this respect.
The committee expressed satisfaction with the State of Qatar’s engagement with international human rights mechanisms, particularly those concerned with protecting the rights of persons with disabilities, Al Attiyah underlined. She noted that the enactment of this law underscores the State of Qatar’s commitment to positively responding to the recommendations of these mechanisms, along with its significant role in the human rights field on the regional and global stages.
