New Zealand Central Bank Maintains Rate at 2.75%, Surprises Markets

Wellington:The Reserve Bank of New Zealand decided to maintain its official cash rate (OCR) at 2.75% in a surprising move that defied market predictions of a rate increase. This decision was made in a narrow 4-3 vote, as policymakers balanced ongoing inflation risks with economic uncertainty.

According to Qatar News Agency, the bank's Monetary Policy Committee recognized the continued elevated inflationary pressures but chose to keep the rate unchanged to allow further assessment of economic conditions and the impact of prior rate hikes. The committee reiterated its commitment to achieving the 2% inflation target midpoint over the medium term.

The report highlighted that annual consumer price inflation decreased to 3.7% in the September quarter from 4.1% in June. Nonetheless, the bank anticipates inflation to rise to 4.4% in the December quarter, primarily due to increased fuel prices linked to global energy market disruptions.

The committee agreed on the overall inflation outlook but had differing views on the significance of various risks and the timing for additional monetary tightening. They acknowledged that tighter monetary policy may be necessary but emphasized that future actions would depend on the economic outlook.

The next monetary policy decision is set for December 9, with the possibility of another rate hike contingent on forthcoming economic data and persistent inflationary pressures. Following the announcement, the New Zealand dollar experienced a sharp decline, dropping nearly one US cent to approximately 55.9 US cents, as markets reacted to the unexpected rate hold.
