NATO Secretary General: US Withdrawal from Alliance, Unlikely

Doha: North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Secretary General, Mark Rutte said that the United States' withdrawal from NATO is unlikely, stressing that Washington's security commitment to Europe remains intact.

According to Qatar News Agency, Rutte stated in a press release that the American nuclear umbrella serves as the ultimate guarantor of security in Europe and expressed his conviction that it will continue to do so. This statement follows weeks of speculation spurred by US President Donald Trump's remarks suggesting the possibility of the US reconsidering its commitment to the alliance. These remarks stemmed from what Trump perceived as insufficient support from some NATO partners, particularly in the conflict involving Iran.

Rutte mentioned that any potential US withdrawal from NATO would necessitate approval from a two-thirds majority in the United States Senate, which he views as highly unlikely. He recounted his recent meeting with President Trump at the White House, where he sensed the President's clear disappointment with NATO and several partner countries.

The disagreements between the US and other NATO countries include issues concerning the use of military bases and the mission to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Rutte noted that he understands President Trump's position and frustration on these matters.

In terms of enhancing defense capabilities, Rutte urged European nations to advance their defense industries, emphasizing the necessity of this move to sustain defense and deterrence. He also highlighted the importance of maintaining NATO unity amidst growing security challenges, reaffirming the United States' continuous role as a cornerstone of European security.
