Mauritania’s President urges Arab unity at Bahrain Summit amid Palestinian crisis

His Excellency Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh AI Ghazouani, President of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, affirmed that the circumstances in which the 33rd session of the Council of the League of Arab States is being held at the summit level are exceptional, very complex and sensitive, expressing his bitterness and sorrow towards the systematic genocide to which the Palestinians, particularly in the Gaza Strip, are subjected, and the weakness of the Arab collective capacity to influence effectively internationally, despite the potential of the Arabs that qualify them to be effective actors on the international scene.

In his speech during the opening session of the Arab Summit, held on Thursday in Manama, His Excellency expressed his hope that this session will constitute a decisive turning point in the direction of raising joint Arab action to a level that achieves the hopes of the Arab peoples and enhances the ability to raise the acute crises facing the nation.

The speech reads as follows:

“In the name of A
llah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful, and may Allah’s prayers be upon His Holy Prophet.

– His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, King of the Kingdom of Bahrain;

– Your Majesties, Excellencies and Highnesses;

– His Excellency the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States;

– Excellencies;

– Ladies and gentlemen;

May peace, mercy and blessings of Allah Almighty be upon you;

At the outset, I would like to extend my sincere thanks to my brother, His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, King of the Kingdom of Bahrain, His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, and to the Bahraini people in general, for hosting this 33rd session of the Council of the League of Arab States.

I also congratulate His Majesty on assuming the presidency of the Council of the League of Arab States, noting his prominent and strong role in serving the causes of the Arab nation.

I would also like to extend my sincere thanks to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, His Maj
esty King Salman bin Abdulaziz, and to His Royal Highness Crown Prince and Prime Minister, Prince Mohammed bin Salman, for the remarkable achievements made during the presidency of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia at the last session in advancing joint Arab action.

In this context, I cannot fail to commend the tireless efforts of His Excellency the Secretary-General, Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, and his team to upgrade and develop the working mechanisms of our Arab League.

Your Majesties, Excellencies and Highnesses;

– Ladies and gentlemen;

It goes without saying that the circumstances in which our summit is being held today are exceptional, extremely complex and sensitive, as we all feel bitterly and sadly in the systematic genocide to which our Palestinian brothers, especially in the Gaza Strip, are subjected.

We also feel deeply in the weakness of our collective capacity to influence effectively internationally, despite our potential to be an effective actor on the international stage.

– Your Majesties, Excelle
ncies and Highnesses;

– Ladies and gentlemen;

Israel’s insistence in the Gaza Strip on continuing its killing, displacement and genocide in full view of the whole world weakens confidence and hope in the international community and its institutions and reinforces the conviction of its double standards.

This situation makes it imperative for us, as Arab States, to redouble our efforts and intensify coordination with all international parties in order to put an immediate end to this barbaric and unjust war and to restore the situation to what it was before its inception in order to work towards the establishment of a permanent solution that guarantees the inherent right of the Palestinians to the establishment of an independent State, with East Jerusalem as its capital, in accordance with the relevant United Nations resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative.

That is our firm position in the Islamic Republic of Mauritania. We are convinced that there is no other way to achieve sustainable and comprehensive s
ecurity and stability in this region.

It is very wrong to believe that by continuing to destroy and destroy they can achieve lasting security and stability for themselves at the expense of others.

Just as we are obliged to strive to stop the war on Gaza and to enable the Palestinians to fulfil their inherent right within the framework of the two-State solution, we are also urgently called upon to find peaceful and sustainable solutions to intraregional conflicts wherever they arise in our Arab space.

It is true that the various crises in the Arab world are due in large part to the complexities of the international situation, and the gravity of the challenges that often characterize it, but the failure of our joint Arab action to achieve the desired level of efficiency plays a significant role in the continuation and sometimes exacerbation of these crises.

We must therefore work to renounce the causes of division and discord and to promote a culture of dialogue and coordination at various levels.

The stro
ng historical, cultural and ideological ties that unite us and the great values of fraternity, solidarity and synergy on which our Arab civilization is built make it imperative for us to achieve security and peace throughout our Arab space, so that it truly becomes a space of fraternity, reconciliation and integration.

Strengthening our joint Arab action is our gateway to resolving our Arab crises, as well as to adapting effectively to the looming profound geostrategic changes.

I hope that this thirty-third session of the Council of the League of Arab States will constitute a decisive turning point in the direction of elevating our joint Arab action to a level that fulfills the hopes of our peoples and enhances our ability to address the acute crises facing our nation.

Thank you.

May peace, mercy and blessings of Allah Almighty be upon you.”
