Mali's transitional government announced today that it has lifted a ban on political parties, allowing them to resume their work after a three-month hiatus. The government has decided to take this deterrent measure in order to contain any potential public unrest during this important event, the country's cabinet said in a statement, adding that the government is currently focused on implementing the proposals of the national dialogue held from April 13 to May 10, and it will allow political parties to resume their activities. The military council had suspended political parties in April ahead of the start of a national dialogue to bring peace to the Sahel country, which has been battling armed violence in the north for more than a decade.
