Lusail Circuit Highlights Sustainability Initiatives During Qatar Sustainability Week

Doha:Lusail International Circuit (LIC) has actively participated in the 11th edition of Qatar Sustainability Week, held from October 31 to November 7, 2026.

According to Qatar News Agency, the event is led by Earthna Center for a Sustainable Future in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, bringing together sustainability efforts from across Qatar. LIC is showcasing three initiatives during this year's campaign, focusing on clean energy, electronic waste management, and biodiversity, particularly during major sporting events such as the MotoGP Qatar Airways Grand Prix of Qatar 2026 and the FORMULA 1 QATAR AIRWAYS QATAR GRAND PRIX 2026.

The clean energy initiative includes the installation of rooftop solar PV with a capacity of approximately 1.24 MWp to supplement the venue's electricity supply. This is expected to generate around 120 MWh of energy over three weeks. Additionally, LIC is optimizing energy use through building management systems, LED display walls, and solar-powered wayfinding signage. New electric scissor lifts and solar lighting towers are set to be introduced in 2026.

LIC also focuses on material reuse, such as upcycling event banners into bags, using 100% recycled PET for water bottles, and promoting digital ticketing. Waste management is supported through multistream waste bins, recycling stations, and an on-site segregation yard. Surplus food will be redirected through a donation program, and a recycled art activation will be featured in the Fan Zone.

The circuit's biodiversity efforts include a green perimeter with 88,000 m² of landscaped area and 2,490 trees, including endangered species, forming a basis for future biodiversity planning. LIC has also participated in an electronic waste collection drive and developed biodiversity enhancement concepts.

LIC's environmental management framework includes achieving FIA Three Star Environmental Accreditation in 2025, signing the UNFCCC Sports for Climate Action framework in April 2026, and recognition in the 2026 Sustainable Circuits Index. The MotoGP event takes place from November 6 to 8, followed by the Formula 1 event from November 27 to 29.
