Kenya Confirms First Ebola Death from Bundibugyo Virus

Nairobi:Kenya has reported its first Ebola-related death after a Kenyan national, who had been residing in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, succumbed to the Bundibugyo virus disease in Nairobi, according to the Health Ministry.

According to Qatar News Agency, Health Minister Aden Duale revealed that the individual arrived in Nairobi on Saturday and was admitted to a hospital exhibiting symptoms such as fever, chills, and bleeding under the skin. Despite being swiftly isolated, the patient died after several days of treatment.

The World Health Organization, along with its partners, is aiding Kenyan authorities in enhancing preparedness and response strategies following the confirmed case.

Meanwhile, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported that efforts to combat the Ebola outbreak in the Ituri and North Kivu provinces are ongoing. These regions have seen a significant rise in new cases, accounting for more than 94% of the country's recent infections.

OCHA expressed concern about new movement restrictions on major roads in North Kivu, which, although aimed at controlling the outbreak, may impede humanitarian access and disrupt aid operations. Ebola virus disease spreads through direct contact with the blood or bodily fluids of infected individuals, causing symptoms ranging from fever to severe internal and external bleeding.
