Iraqi FM, OIC Secretary-General Discuss Repercussions of Burning Copies of Holy Quran

Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein discussed on Monday with the Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Hussein Ibrahim Taha, the possibility of setting up a mechanism for dialogue with the European Union on the concept of freedom of expression to prevent the recurrence of burning and desecration of the Holy Quran.

During the meeting, the two sides discussed a set of mechanisms aimed first at launching a dialogue with the official and societal European side, in addition to finding a mechanism for dialogue and communication with international organizations and working through them to ensure that the dialogues are at the international level.

In a joint press conference with the OIC Secretary-General, the Iraqi Foreign Minister said that the bilateral talks discussed issues of combating the phenomenon of Islamophobia, racist movements, and discrimination against Muslims in many countries of the world, stressing the seriousness of this phenomenon, and what it could lead to in terms of religious discrimination, instability, and the trend towards violence, which necessitated promoting the idea of meetings and creating a mechanism for dialogue with the European Union.

For his part, Hussein Ibrahim Taha noted the position of the Iraqi government regarding the burning of copies of the Holy Quran in Sweden and Denmark and its call for holding an extraordinary meeting of the foreign ministers of the OIC member states at the end of July, stressing the importance of the decision that came out of the meeting, and its important impact in confronting these crimes.
