Baghdad: Iraqi political analysts and experts said that the speech delivered by HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani during the opening session of the 80th United Nations General Assembly carried important messages that addressed key regional issues, foremost among them the Palestinian question. They noted that the address emphasized the need to end international double standards and to support the just causes of oppressed peoples.
According to Qatar News Agency, researcher Rahim Al Shammari highlighted that HH the Amir’s speech underscored the challenges facing the Middle East, serving as a direct call for peace and an end to wars. He warned that Israel’s continued aggression against the Palestinian people and neighboring countries would lead to regional tensions with global repercussions. Al Shammari added that the recent Israeli attack on Qatar’s sovereignty was an attempt to derail peace efforts aimed at stopping the war in Gaza.
Al-Shammari described HH the Amir’s message as frank and clear, noting that he directly told the international community that the State of Qatar had worked tirelessly with Egypt and the United States to achieve calm, hosting delegations from both Hamas and Israel, only to be betrayed by an Israeli strike that targeted Qatari territory and guests under negotiation. He said the balanced yet forceful speech reflected Qatar’s sense of Arab and Islamic responsibility in seeking solutions and stability, as well as a resolution to the Arab-Israeli conflict that has persisted since 1948.
Iraqi academic Dr. Alaa Al Nadawi said HH the Amir’s address embodied a steadfast and transparent position that not only described realities but placed the international community before its historical responsibilities. He recalled that HH the Amir stressed that justice is indivisible and that peace cannot be achieved without ending occupation and alleviating the suffering of oppressed peoples, particularly the Palestinians. Al Nadawi added that the speech offered a vision grounded in international law, mediation, and cooperative diplomacy at a time when wars and crises are escalating, and he called for courageous positions to restore the United Nations’ credibility and role.
Political analyst Dr. Mohamed Al Moussawi described the speech as highly impactful for placing Palestine at the center of attention as the core wound of the Arab and Islamic worlds. He noted that HH the Amir’s call for urgent international action to stop crimes against unarmed civilians, including children, women, and the elderly, served as a clear warning against the continuation of Israeli aggression, which he said has crossed all bounds of criminality. Al Moussawi also pointed out that the Amir urged the world to support the establishment of a Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital, an appeal consistent with Qatar’s long-standing commitment to the Palestinian cause.
Al Moussawi further referred to the Israeli attack on Doha on Sep. 9, noting that the Amir characterized it as a blatant betrayal. According to the Amir, an Israeli delegation had visited Qatar under the guise of negotiations while secretly planning airstrikes and the assassination of Palestinian negotiators hosted there. Al Moussawi described this as a flagrant violation of the sovereignty of a UN member state and an act of state terrorism against a country that has worked for years to mediate peace, shocking the international community.
Deputy head of the Iraqi Journalists Syndicate Mohamed Hanoun said HH the Amir underscored the State of Qatar’s role as a significant player in international politics through conflict mediation, promotion of dialogue, and insistence on respect for international law. Hanoun noted that the Amir’s speeches consistently emphasize Qatar’s impartial role as a mediator in crises both within and beyond the Middle East, citing Qatar’s tangible efforts in Afghanistan, Sudan, and Palestine. He added that the Amir presents these achievements at the UN to highlight Qatar’s contribution to global stability, alongside its unwavering support for the Palestinian cause and for peoples’ right to self-determination.
Hanoun concluded that HH the Amir’s participation in the General Assembly was not merely ceremonial but a carefully crafted political tool to affirm Qatar’s influence as a state that combines conflict mediation with the defense of regional issues and active engagement in global development and peace agendas.
