Rome, Romelu Lukaku’s brace helped Inter Milan win 3-0 at troubled Genoa Saturday to go second past Atalanta in the Italian Serie A and close within four points of Juventus, who can secure the title by beating Sampdoria the following day.
Atalanta opened matchday 36 with a 1-1 draw against AC Milan on Friday and lie one point behind Inter; fourth-last Genoa sit four clear of the three-team drop zone with two games remaining, according to Deutsche press agency (dpa).
The powerful Lukaku had the better of defender Cristian Zapata to nod in on 34 minutes, and closed the scoring with a counter-attack run in stoppage time, tallying his 23rd league goal.
Substitute Alexis Sanchez had volleyed in the second seven minutes from time.
“Personally I am happy but the team can do more,” said Lukaku, who reached a personal season best of 29 goals. “It won’t be easy to stay second but we want to finish as high as possible and I want to help my team.
“We have lost too many points, but this a young team with a will to grow. We must continue on as we have two more [domestic] games which are important to gear up for the Europa League [in August].”
Inter and Atalanta, who meet in the season’s closing round, are already qualified, with Juve and Lazio, for the next Champions League.
Later in Naples, Napoli beat gritty Sassuolo 2-0, remaining in seventh place, one point off an Europa League spot but with access to the event secured by winning the Italian Cup. Sassuolo stayed eighth, 12 points behind sixth-placed Milan.
The Neapolitans centre back Elseid Hysaj drilled a low shot into the far corner on eight minutes for his first-ever top-flight goal.
Sassuolo gradually gained the upper hand, but had four goal disallowed for off-side, three of which from the video assistant referee, before Napoli’s Brazilian substitute Allan struck in added time.
Parma won 2-1 at already relegated Brescia in the day opener, with an assist and the late winner from Dejan Kulusevski, who will play next season at Juve.
Six games are programmed on Sunday.
