HM King meets UN Secretary General on sidelines of 33rd Arab Summit

Manama, His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa today received His Excellency Mr. António Guterres, the Secretary General of the United Nations (UN) at Al Sakhir Palace, on the occasion of his participation in the 33rd Arab Summit.

During the meeting, HM the King thanked HE the Secretary General for his participation in the summit, praising the advanced relations and cooperation between Bahrain and the UN, with all its agencies and specialised bodies.

His Majesty the King underscored the UN’s role in promoting regional and international peace, security, and stability, alongside adopting initiatives and finding solutions to various global challenges. His Majesty also highlighted the United Nations’ efforts in addressing natural disasters, mitigating climate change, fighting poverty, delivering humanitarian aid, and promoting the values of tolerance.

For his part, HE Mr. Guterres expressed his gratitude to HM the King for his generous hospitality and invitation to attend the 33rd Arab Summit.

He hailed the kingdom’s efforts in organising the summit, wishing Their Majesties, His Excellencies, and Their Highnesses success in serving the Arab world, driving sustainable development, and fostering peace and stability throughout the region.

HE Mr. Guterres commended the kingdom’s efforts in supporting the UN and its contributions towards enhancing regional and international security and stability, under the leadership of HM King Hamad.

The two sides also discussed regional and international topics, particularly the developments in the Middle East and measures to mitigate tensions.

The meeting discussed the situation in the Gaza Strip, the importance of achieving an immediate cease-fire and ensuring the delivery of humanitarian aid. HM the King and the UN Secretary General also discussed efforts towards achieving fair and comprehensive peace, based on a
two-state solution.
