Doha: HH Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, Chairperson of Qatar Foundation, attended the first day of Jadal, the annual research summit by Qatar Foundation’s Al-Mujadilah Center and Mosque for Women.
According to Qatar News Agency, the inaugural three-day research summit – the opening of which was also attended by HE Sheikha Hind bint Hamad Al-Thani, Vice Chairperson and CEO of Qatar Foundation – is being held at Al-Mujadilah, which opened its doors to Qatar’s and the world’s Muslim women in February 2024. It is welcoming over 100 delegates from North America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, representing women from both the Global North and South.
Jadal, meaning “dialogue” or “discourse” in Arabic, is gathering esteemed Muslim women scholars, researchers, and practitioners from around the world to engage in discussions centered on ‘Muslim Women in Public Life’. This central topic will be explored through themes such as Muslim Women and the Law, Women’s Lives and History, and Muslim Women’s Well-Being and Health.
Her Highness Sheikha Moza emphasized the Quranic concept of jadal as praised in Surat al-Mujadilah, inspired by Khawla bint Tha’laba’s story. Khawla bint Tha’laba serves as an example of a Muslim woman who engaged with her religious tradition, advocating for her rights. The Jadal summit draws from this legacy, aiming for meaningful engagement.
The summit is driven by Her Highness’ vision of an engaged Muslim society where women’s participation is acknowledged and their perspectives shape contemporary Muslim thought and public discourse.
Dr. Sohaira Z. Siddiqui, Executive Director of Al-Mujadilah, delivered the opening remarks, stating the event embodies the spirit of Al-Mujadilah. She highlighted the need for spaces like Al-Mujadilah that cater to Muslim women, addressing limitations in academia and professional spaces. Dr. Siddiqui stressed the importance of Muslim women’s participation in religious scholarship and its impact on communities.
