Berlin: The German government announced that it will terminate the restrictions on arms exports to Israel, which had been introduced last August amid the ongoing war in Gaza.
According to Qatar News Agency, Stefan Kornelius, the German government spokesman, told the German Press Agency (dpa) Monday that this decision will take effect as of Nov. 24, 2025. Kornelius clarified that the move is predicated on what he termed stability in recent weeks regarding the ceasefire in force between Israel and Hamas since Oct. 10, in addition to ongoing efforts aimed at securing a lasting peace and bolstering humanitarian assistance to the Gaza Strip.
The German government will now return, as a general matter, to a case-by-case review with respect to arms exports and will respond to any subsequent developments, Kornelius announced. Kornelius stressed that Germany will continue its commitment to supporting a durable peace in the region and will contribute to meeting humanitarian needs and the reconstruction of Gaza.
Last August, Germany announced the suspension of its military exports to Israel, marking a drastic shift in its long-standing policy, following the approval by what is known as the Security and Political Cabinet of a plan to re-occupy the Gaza Strip, expand military control over it, and forcibly displace its population of roughly 2.4 million. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that under these circumstances, the German government will not permit any exports of military equipment that could potentially be used in the Gaza Strip until further notice, in the first punitive measure undertaken by his government against the Israeli occupation.
He expressed his government’s profound apprehension over the continued suffering of civilians in the Gaza Strip, reiterating his call to ensure unencumbered, full access for United Nations agencies and other nongovernmental organizations to the population of the enclave.
