Basra: Iraq's Ministry of Health announced on Monday that two people have died and 114 others suffered ammonia exposure as a result of an ammonia gas leak at a fertilizer plant in Basra Governorate, southern Iraq.

According to Qatar News Agency, spokesperson for the ministry Saif Al Badr said, in a press statement, that all those affected had been treated and provided with medical care after the ministry dispatched more than 50 ambulances to the site of the incident.

Al Badr added that most of the injuries were minor and that only 21 people remain hospitalized. He confirmed that all hospitalized patients are in stable condition, except for one case, noting that medical care and monitoring of the patients' health conditions are ongoing.

Basra Governorate is one of Iraq's main industrial centers and is home to a number of facilities and factories associated with the oil, petrochemical, and fertilizer sectors.

Ammonia gas is used in fertilizer production, but exposure to high concentrations can pose a health risk to workers and people in the vicinity of a facility, particularly affecting the respiratory system and eyes.
