Doha: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs organized a side event on Wednesday focusing on women’s role in peacebuilding, specifically highlighting voices from the Arab region. This event was held on the sidelines of the Second World Summit for Social Development in Doha.
According to Qatar News Agency, HE Director of International Organizations Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Sheikha Hanouf bint Abdulrahman Al-Thani, underscored the importance Qatar places on enhancing the role of women in mediation and conflict resolution efforts. She affirmed Qatar’s commitment to the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda and noted the country’s participation in the UN Secretary-General’s campaign, “Common Pledge for Women’s Full, Equal and Meaningful Participation in Peace Processes,” initiated last year.
The event featured participation from notable figures, including UN Under-Secretary-General and UN Women Executive Director Sima Bahous; HE Minister of Social Development of the State of Palestine Dr. Samah Hamad; and HE Assistant Foreign Minister for Human Rights Office of the State of Kuwait, Jawaher Al Sabah, who is also a member of the Arab Network for Women Peace Mediators.
Discussions during the event centered on the experiences and contributions of Arab women peace mediators, particularly in conflict prevention and resolution within post-conflict settings. The event also served as a platform to reflect on the successes and lessons learned from their involvement at both local and regional levels.
