European stock indices closed slightly lower Wednesday, affected by a decline in the European banks index.

The European Stoxx 600 index ended trading down 0.12 percent, the German DAX index closed down 0.39 percent, the French CAC index lost 0.50 percent, and the British FTSE index fell 0.17 percent.

In a related context, the European banks index closed down 0.8 percent .
