Montreal:The European Union and Canada have unveiled an "Alliance of the Future" aimed at enhancing cooperation in several key areas, including trade, energy, artificial intelligence, critical minerals, and defense. This initiative comes as a response to increasing global economic tensions.
According to Qatar News Agency, the announcement was made following a two-day summit in Montreal. During the summit, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney indicated that negotiations are anticipated to conclude by June 2027, potentially leading to a closer relationship with the EU and making Canada its first associate member.
European leaders have shown support for the initiative to strengthen ties, although there are still disagreements concerning the proposed membership status. Additionally, both parties have agreed to broaden digital trade cooperation, consider Canadian LNG exports to Europe, and enhance cybersecurity and Arctic security measures.
This strategic move is part of a broader effort by Canada and Europe to lessen their economic dependency on the United States, particularly in light of ongoing trade tensions with Washington.
