Peshawar:Pakistani security forces have conducted an operation in North Waziristan, resulting in the deaths of eight militants, as violence continues to escalate in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
According to Qatar News Agency, the militants were part of a banned group, and their hideouts were destroyed during the operation.
In a separate incident near Peshawar, a militant and a police officer were killed during a gunfight between militants and a counter-terrorism unit. Three additional individuals were wounded in the exchange.
A senior official from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's Counter Terrorism Department reported that the unit had acted on intelligence regarding militant presence in Garhi Sherdad, near Warsak Road, on Peshawar's outskirts. An operation was planned following this information, but militants opened fire upon the arrival of security personnel.
These incidents occur amidst a rise in militant attacks in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies noted that the province experienced 54 attacks in August, up from 36 in July, marking a 50% increase. Security forces' operations in August across the province resulted in 60 deaths, including 56 militants, as efforts to combat armed groups continue.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, bordering Afghanistan, remains a key area for Pakistan's security operations due to ongoing militant activities in the region.
