Doha: The Doha Political Declaration, issued Tuesday at the Second World Summit for Social Development in Doha, affirmed a commitment to promoting inclusive and sustainable economic growth and providing decent work for all.
According to Qatar News Agency, the declaration stipulated the adoption of macroeconomic policies that promote job creation, decent work, and subsistence wages. It emphasized transitioning from the informal to the formal economy, considering the circumstances of countries, and promoting inclusive and sustainable economic growth.
The declaration highlighted the need for a favorable international economic environment for developing countries, enhancing technical and financial assistance for macroeconomic policy programs, and supporting steady, sustainable, and inclusive economic growth. It stressed the importance of strengthening international cooperation to provide developing countries with necessary financial assistance, technical support, and capacity-building opportunities to ensure full and productive employment and decent work for all.
Furthermore, the declaration called for promoting equitable access for developing countries to global markets, investments, and technologies. It emphasized the role of the international community in supporting countries, including those with economies in transition.
Support for entrepreneurship was highlighted, particularly for women, people with disabilities, the elderly, and youth, along with support for innovative mechanisms, micro, small and medium enterprises, cooperatives, and the social and solidarity economy. The declaration encouraged the private sector’s role in creating job opportunities and decent work and recognized the importance of responsible business conduct.
The Doha Political Declaration also addressed the multiplier effects of care and support systems in increasing work participation, facilitating transitions to formal work, ensuring decent working conditions in the care sector, and granting caregivers and care recipients access to social protection. It called for investments in social infrastructure and strengthening social protection.
Additionally, the declaration advocated for policies that ensure women’s economic empowerment through gender-responsive budgeting, full access to decent work, equal opportunities in the labor market, and equal pay for work of equal value. It emphasized enhancing capacity building to improve workforce skills and prepare for the impact of artificial intelligence across sectors.
