Damascus: The inaugural Damascus International Festival of Arabic Poetry began at the Damascus Opera House, marking a significant cultural event under the theme "Poetry Begins in Damascus". The festival showcases broad participation from Qatar and various Arab nations, featuring 55 poets, writers, and lecturers from 16 different countries.According to Qatar News Agency, the festival will run until August 7, 2026, and aims to highlight Qatari innovation in the field of poetry. It pays tribute to Qatari poet and writer Dr. Hassan Ali Al Nimah, acknowledging his significant contributions to intellectual and diplomatic spheres. The festival also honors Qatari media figure and poet Ali Al Masoudi, celebrating Qatar's cultural influence in this international gathering.During the opening ceremony, the Syrian Minister of Culture, Mohammad Yassin Saleh, highlighted the recognition of esteemed artistic figures, including Kuwaiti poet Dr. Suad Al Sabah, Saudi critic Dr. Abdullah Al Ghathami, Kuwaiti poet Dr. Mishal Al Zaabi, Lebanese poet Chawki Bzai, and Syrian critic Dr. Khaldoun Al Shammaa. Their contributions to intellectual and humanitarian efforts were underscored.The festival's agenda includes poetry evenings, intellectual seminars, artistic and musical performances, and critical lectures. Additionally, cultural and sightseeing tours will be organized to introduce guests to Damascus' historical and civilizational landmarks.
