Benin Foils Attempted Coup as Government Maintains Control, Says FM

Benin: Benin’s Foreign Minister OlusHegun Adjadi Bakari announced on Sunday that an attempted coup by a group of soldiers earlier in the day had failed, affirming that the situation in the country is under control. “There was an attempt to seize power, but the situation is now under control. The majority of the army remains loyal to the state,” Bakari said.

According to Qatar News Agency, earlier on Sunday, the group of soldiers had declared on national television that they had taken over power and removed President Patrice Talon. Authorities have since moved to secure key institutions and restore order.
