Bahrain’s Permanent Representative to UN participates in open debate on situation in the Middle East, including Palestinian issue
New York, Ambassador Jamal Faris Al Rowaie, Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Bahrain to the United Nations, participated in the high-level open debate of the Security Council on the situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian issue.
The open debate was chaired by Mauro Vieira, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Brazil.
The ambassador reiterated Bahrain’s stance on prioritising an immediate ceasefire, ending military operations in the Gaza Strip and providing protection for civilians from the Palestinian and Israeli sides.
Al Rowaie called for the release of hostages and facilitating entry of medical aid, food, water, fuel, and electricity to the Gaza Strip in accordance with international humanitarian law, to mitigate this humanitarian disaster and its effects on the lives of more than two million Palestinian people, most of whom are children and women.
The ambassador affirmed that Bahrain, under the leadership of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa with the approach of the government led by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, is committed to pushing forward for a permanent, just peace process in the Middle East.
HM the King stressed in the Cairo Peace Summit on the importance of dialogue and a peaceful approach for ending wars, resolving regional and international disputes, and promoting safety and prosperity without discrimination, the ambassador said.
Al Rowaie commended António Guterres’s, Secretary General of the United Nations, call during his speech in the Cairo Peace Summit for an immediate ceasefire for humanitarian purposes; ensuring the sustainable, immediate, and unhindered delivery of relief aid to civilians trapped in the Gaza Strip; and the need to comply with international humanitarian law by protecting civilians and civilian facilities.
The ambassador renewed Bahrain’s call to exercise restraint, respect international humanitarian law- including the Geneva Convention, refrain from targeting residential neighborhoods, health, educational facilities, places of worship, and infrastructure, and its refusal of any attempts to forcibly displace the Palestinian people.
The Kingdom of Bahrain calls for refraining from any actions that would expand the current cycle of violence and war, the ambassador added.
The UN’s permanent representative emphasised Bahrain’s firm stance on supporting the Palestinian people’s freedom and the right to self-determination and establishing their independent, sovereign state on the borders of July 4, 1967 with East Jerusalem as its capital, based on a two-state solution in accordance with international resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiatives.
He said that this was considered a true guarantee of coexistence between the Palestinian and the Israeli people safely and peacefully.
The ambassador urged the Security Council to bear its historic responsibilities in implementing relevant international legitimacy resolutions to provide international protection for civilians; respect the historical and legal status quo in Jerusalem; stop measures that lead to the displacement of Palestinians, confiscating land, and building illegal settlements, facilitate the work of humanitarian and relief organisations without obstacles; and revive the peace process negotiations that lead to a two state solution.
He said that reviving the peace process was a strategic option to achieve just and comprehensive peace and ensure the rights of the people of the region to security, peace, prosperity, and human dignity.
