Arab League Explores Impact of AI and Autonomous Weapons in Military Operations

Cairo: The second regional conference focusing on “Modern Technologies and International Humanitarian Law: Autonomous Weapons Systems and Artificial Intelligence in the Military Domain,” began today at the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States in Cairo. This significant event aims to address the growing influence of modern technologies on military operations and their implications on international humanitarian law.

According to Qatar News Agency, the two-day conference is organized by the Arab League’s Department of Arms Control and Disarmament of the International Political Affairs Sector, in collaboration with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). The conference sees participation from experts hailing from various Arab countries and the ICRC, emphasizing a collective approach towards understanding and managing the impact of advanced military technologies.

The primary objective of the conference is to foster international dialogue and develop a unified stance on the challenges posed by the integration of technologies like artificial intelligence and autonomous weapons systems in military operations. It aims to explore the humanitarian, legal, and ethical considerations that arise with the adoption of such technologies, as nations worldwide increasingly incorporate them into their military strategies.
