Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Ataf discussed, in a phone call on Saturday with High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell Fontelles, latest developments in Niger.
They stressed the importance of unifying the political and diplomatic efforts to ensure restoration of the constitutional system in Niger through reinstating Mohamed Bazoum as a legitimately elected head of state.
The European official informed Algerian Foreign Minister about measures endorsed by the European Union against the military coup plotters in Niger.
Ataf reaffirmed Algeria’s conviction of the need to give priority to the political and diplomatic track, given the inherent consequences in the option of resorting to force that may exacerbate the situation.
