Activities of “Tripoli, Capital of Arab Culture for the Year 2024” Launched with Qatar’s Participation

The activities of “Tripoli, Capital of Arab Culture for the Year 2024” were launched on Friday in the Lebanese city of Tripoli, in an official celebration with the participation of a number of ministers, representatives of a number of Arab countries including the State of Qatar, and Arab ambassadors to Lebanon.

HE Ambassador of the State of Qatar to the Republic of Lebanon Sheikh Saud bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani participated in the opening ceremony of the activities of “Tripoli, Capital of Arab Culture” at the Rashid Karami International Exhibition in Tripoli.

Minister of Culture in the Lebanese caretaker government Mohamed Wissam Al Murtada, hailed the declaration of Tripoli as the capital of Arab culture for the year 2024, and said, “This occasion should be an opportunity in which the city regains its full position on the map of sustainable development, given the economic facilities and cultural capabilities it contains, and the potential highly qualified human beings in all fields.

l of the Arab Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO) Dr. Mohamed Ould Omar stressed that the ancient history of Tripoli, from the Phoenicians to the various Islamic eras, its full libraries, and its archaeological monuments, which exceed 180 archaeological monuments which shape the cultural face of Tripoli, makes it worthy of celebration is an opportunity to rediscover it again and introduce its heritage and its scholars.

The ALECSO has been implementing, since 1996, the program to celebrate the Arab capitals of culture, in order to commemorate the cultural status of Arab cities, and to contribute to presenting the bright image of Arab culture, dusting off the cultural heritage and preserving it, and also developing the bonds of kinship and cultural communication between Arab cities and metropolises, he added.

ALECSO has chosen Tripoli as the capital of Arab culture for the year 2024, due to the landmarks, antiquities and heritage it contains dating back to historical eras, starting with
the Phoenicians and Canaanites, passing through the Roman, Arab, Ottoman and Mamluk eras, where many antiquities still bear witness to those eras, as well as a stock of The scientific and intellectual city, even described as the city of science and scholars.
