Academic at the Arab American University, Dr. Mujahid Zayed, participates in an international scientific conference in Iraq

Jenin – Together – Dr. Mujahid Zayed, a lecturer at the Language Center at the Arab American University, participated in the eighth international scientific conference titled ‘Cognitive Pathways for the Humanities and Social Sciences – Reality and Leadership Prospects,’ which was previously held at the Iraqi University of Wasit in the city of Kut.

Dr. Zayed, who was a representative of the Arab American University, presented a study he conducted in cooperation with international researchers, which was entitled ‘An analytical study of the motives for linguistic alternation between Arabic and English among young Arabs in formal and informal dialogues.’ This study aimed to explore the most important motives that drive Arabs at the age of Young people use linguistic alternation while conducting dialogues in groups of friends and school or work colleagues, as a linguistic phenomenon that has become widespread among young people from different languages ??and cultures of the world, especially Arabs in the Middle E
ast.

During his participation in the conference, Dr. Zayed provided theoretical coverage of the phenomenon of linguistic alternation between multiple language pairs, including English, French, Russian, Spanish, and German, until he ended with a review of the most important features of this linguistic phenomenon between Arabic and English.

The results of the study showed that Arab youth tend to use linguistic alternation for several reasons, the most important of which is deliberately using terminology specific to a group with a social or professional relationship without exposing it to individuals outside this group, as is the case when a group of doctors is in a conversation and they use Latin terms to close the door to others. The doctor to understand the context of the conversation, and Arabs also use this linguistic phenomenon to show belonging to a specific class or category of society, usually a class characterized by social sophistication, in addition to the tendency of a certain group of Arabs to us

Dr. Zayed stressed the importance of participating in the conference in view of the real results reached by the researchers through the analysis of realistic linguistic situations of an important phenomenon in linguistics, and because it places the name of the Arab American University in international events and conferences with scientific outputs with high credibility, and thus enhances the university’s remarkable presence among the finest.
