According to Qatar News Agency, a statement issued by Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) indicated that the earthquake's epicenter was located 231 kilometers west of the Tanimbar Islands, at a depth of 137 kilometers. Despite the quake's significant magnitude, no tsunami warnings were issued, providing some relief to the local population.

Indonesia is situated on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region known for its high levels of seismic and volcanic activity due to the convergence of several tectonic plates.
