5.9-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Waters Off Taiwan

Beijing, An earthquake measuring 5.9 magnitude on the Richter scale jolted the waters off Taiwan's Hualien County Tuesday.

The China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC) said that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 km.

There have been no reports of material damage or human losses due to the earthquake so far.

Taiwan lies near tectonic faults at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean, making it vulnerable to regular earthquakes.

More than 100 people died in an earthquake in southern Taiwan in 2016, and a 7.6-magnitude earthquake killed more than 2,000 people in 1999.
