5.3-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Chile

An earthquake measuring 5.3 magnitude on the Richter scale hit Aysen region in Chile.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) said that the earthquake occurred 287 km from Puerto Chacabuco town in the region, at a depth of 10 km.

There have been no reports of casualties or material losses due to the earthquake so far.

In 2010, an earthquake of 8.8 magnitude and tsunami hit central and southern Chile, killing 500 people.

Chile is located in an area called the Ring of Fire, which is an arc of rifts that surround the Pacific Ocean basin, and is subject to frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity
