44 Civilians Killed in Armed Clashes in Central Nigeria

Doha: At least 44 civilians have been killed in separate attacks in central Nigeria in recent days. Chairman of Gwer West local government of Benue state, Ormin Torsar Victor, said the victims fell due to clashes in three villages from Friday to Tuesday between herders and farmers over access to farmland. Victor added that 14 bodies were recovered this morning in the village of Aondona, including a pregnant woman and a two-year-old child, while 30 people were killed in the village of Ahume. He said that the death toll is increasing day by day and expressed his belief that the attacks are systematic, especially since victims were either shot or stabbed.

According to Qatar News Agency, the violence erupted as tensions over resources continue to plague the region. The clashes between herders and farmers are a long-standing issue, exacerbated by competition for land and water. Authorities are concerned about the ongoing violence and its impact on local communities.

The recent attacks have prompted calls for increased security measures and intervention from the Nigerian government. Local leaders are urging for a peaceful resolution to the disputes to prevent further loss of life. The situation remains tense, with fears of more violence if the underlying issues are not addressed.
