25 Countries Demand Immediate End to Gaza Conflict

Middle East: Twenty-five countries, including Britain, France, and several European nations, have issued a joint statement calling for an immediate end to the conflict in Gaza and urging Israel to adhere to international law.

According to Deutsche Welle, the statement from these nations emphasizes the dire humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza, highlighting the urgent need for a ceasefire, the release of hostages, and the full resumption of humanitarian aid. This collective appeal follows reports of a tragic incident in which at least 80 Palestinians were killed by Israeli forces while attempting to gather food in northern Gaza, as reported by the Health Ministry in Gaza.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry has dismissed the joint statement, criticizing it as being disconnected from reality and potentially sending the wrong message to Hamas. The ministry holds Hamas solely responsible for the ongoing conflict and the suffering experienced by both sides. It further stated that making such statements during sensitive negotiations is unhelpful.

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) Chief, Philippe Lazzarini, condemned the actions of a rival aid organization, describing their aid distribution scheme as a “sadistic death trap.” He criticized the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation’s operations, claiming that snipers unjustly targeted civilians seeking aid.

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul expressed concerns over the humanitarian situation during a conversation with Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar. He urged Israel to honor agreements with the European Union to facilitate humanitarian aid.

The escalating situation in Gaza has drawn international concern, with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressing alarm over the worsening humanitarian crisis. His spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, highlighted the plight of civilians suffering from malnutrition and condemned the violence against those seeking food.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) described the mass displacement order in Deir al-Balah as a devastating blow to the Gaza Strip. Initial estimates suggest that up to 80,000 people were present in the area at the time of the evacuation order.

Meanwhile, the Israeli military has expanded its operations in Gaza, launching a ground offensive in Deir al-Balah. This marks the first ground offensive in the area since the conflict began in October 2023. Israel’s military continues to target Hamas fighters and infrastructure, urging civilians to evacuate for their safety.

The ongoing conflict and humanitarian crisis in Gaza remain a focal point of international diplomatic efforts, as countries seek to end the violence and address the urgent needs of the affected civilian population.
