12 Killed in Residential Building Fire in Southern China

Doha: Twelve people were killed and several others were injured in a residential building fire in the southern Chinese city of Shantou: state news agency Xinhua reported on Wednesday. The blaze broke out on Tuesday evening in a four-story building and was brought under control about 40 minutes later, according to the report. An investigation into the cause of the fire is currently under way.

According to Qatar News Agency, the incident comes as the death toll from Hong Kong’s deadliest fire in decades climbed to 160 on Tuesday. The Shantou fire is the latest in a series of similar fatal incidents reported across the country in recent years.

In April, 20 people were killed in a fire that broke out at a nursing home for the elderly in the northern province of Hebei.
